Puberty Girl

Puberty GirlPuberty Girl (2004, Allen and Unwin) is a best seller and currently published in 8 languages around the world. It developed out of 18 years of working with preteen girls and their parents in workshops, presentations and public talks. Workshops initially started at The Royal Hospital for Women in Sydney, and I later ran workshops in schools and in a number of other settings. The Puberty Girls work that informed the writing of the book is about supporting girls to feel empowered around their first period and to feel that puberty and menstruation is a healthy and normal part of growing up. My wish is for girls to love being girls and feel good about all their creative, sporting and academic abilities as well as their appearance.

You can purchase a copy of Puberty Girl directly from my publisher Allen and Unwin. If you’ve read Puberty Girl I would be very happy to answer and questions you have or receive your feedback. I have been deeply touched by the emails from girls and parents around the world and have included some comments below.

Puberty Girl is smart, intelligent, fun, colourful and factual and TELLS IT LIKE IT IS. It talks about the big M, the V word (yep – Vagina!), the period costume, PMS, puberty power and even the B word – breasts! This beautifully illustrated book lets you know what to expect, physically and emotionally, as you tread the path to becoming a woman.

Hey Shushann i have just finished your book ‘puberty girl’ and i cried when i finished it it was like you were talking to me in person. I am ten years of age and my mum just got me this book.

I felt happy and a little bit worried but I read the Puberty book again and i remembered there is nothing to be afraid about because its all a part of growing up. But one good thing is when my friends get there period they will be able to turn to me for advice.

Dear Shushann,
I love your book! I’m 11 years old, and going into sixth grade. Thank you SO much for writing Puberty Girl. I know I’m going to get my period very soon, but I am prepared because of your book. Thanks for an amazing book!
